On June 12, 2023, a member of the Jumby Bay Maritime Department, Captain Samara “Nickey” Emmanuel and her entire Team Antigua Island Girls (TAIG) crew began their row from California to Kauai, Hawaii. In, 41 days, 7 hours, 5 minutes the TAIG team, completed the 2,800 nautical mile inaugural Pacific Challenge 2023. Along the course of the row, the team documents the ups, downs, and in-betweens of their journey. They championed fatigue, mental stress, seasickness, and questionable food options. This row also allowed them to grow closer, appreciate the earth’s many wonders, and create pride amongst Antigua.
Jumby Bay extended a warm and heartfelt congratulations to Samara and the entire crew for finishing 9th overall and 2nd amongst the women’s teams through a company-wide announcement. It is a privilege to have Samara part of the Jumby family – as her and her teammates are the epitome of resilience, strength, power, and determination. The Fund has provided ongoing support by assisting with needed training materials and providing additional oars for their boat.
Captain Nickey once stated that the creation of their team “was like the Universe, God, the Heavens, or the Country, whatever you believe in, coming together….When one of us falls short, the others pick up.” If you ever get a firsthand opportunity to watch them row, you understand Nickey’s sentiment. The TAIG team row like a unified orchestra. TAIGs 2023 Pacific row will add to the funds raised from their 2019 Atlantic row that will go towards their ultimate goals of raising money and awareness to establish a home for girls in Antigua in conflict with the law; to provide a Cottage of Hope. These young ladies’ commitment is a commitment the Fund is honored to be a part of.
