Team Antigua Island Girls
The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is the premier event in ocean rowing. The grueling Trans-Atlantic crossing covers over 3000 miles from San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands to Nelsons’ Dockyard in Antigua’s English Harbour. The race begins in early December with up to 30 teams participating from around the world. Already vaunted as local heroes, each member of the team is dedicated in their training and eagerly awaits the opportunity to represent the twin island nation, and the team’s charity Cottage of Hope, a group home for orphaned and abused girls.
The Team Antigua Island Girls will endeavor to be the first Caribbean all-female team, and the first all-Black team to cross the Atlantic, coming home to Antigua with a crew of just four rowers and a skipper. The team is comprised of Elvira Bell, Christal Clashing, Samara Emmanuel, Kevinia Francis, and Junella King, all currently training under coach Eli Fuller. Samara is actually part of the Jumby Bay Island family as a boat mate of the island’s own ferry system.
