Adopt A Turtle
As sea turtles only come ashore to nest, virtually everything known about them is based on the nesting females and their offspring. Many questions remain about their feeding grounds and migratory routes. Applying satellite transmitters to the turtles allows researchers to identify where these marvelous sea creatures go between nesting events and develop strong management strategies for their conservation.
Through Jumby Bay’s Adopt-A-Turtle program, donors can adopt individual turtles. Participants may choose a name for their hawksbill to replace the turtle’s alphanumerical flipper tag designation, and they receive a certificate with the turtle’s information and photo. Jumby Bay notifies each donor when their adoptee returns to the island to nest and when her hatchlings emerge from the sand. Using satellite tracking, donors can also follow their turtle on her travels throughout the Caribbean.
